After his successful re-reboot in Captain America: Civil War, everyone’s favourite friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is back in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
It’s the sixteenth Marvel Cinematic Universe film and the sixth standalone Spider-Man film, with Tom Holland returning as Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) has a prominent role in Homecoming after giving Peter his new suit in Civil War. Michael Keaton (who we all remember as Batman in the late eighties-early nineties) plays Adrian Toomes/Vulture while Marisa Tomei returns as Aunt May.
The previous Spider-Man films have been hit-and-miss; the first two Sam Raimi films were brilliant (establishing Spider-Man’s origin and the moral choice he faces) but the third was an embarrassing mess (remember Emo Peter Paker?). The Amazing Spider-Man reboot with Andrew Garfield – mean to be darker and grittier like the Nolan Batman films – was underwhelming and scrapped after two films.
After a long legal battle with Sony for the character rights, Marvel Studios have high hopes for their new Spider-Man, with Spidey to feature in Avengers: Infinity War (2018-19) and a Spider-Man sequel already confirmed for 2019.
We’ll have to wait until July 6 to see if Homecoming is worth the hype.
