Australia have missed the Champions Trophy semi-finals after another rain-affected game, losing to England by 40 runs on Duckworth-Lewis.
Australia started positively with Aaron Finch (68 runs from 64 balls) and captain Steve Smith (56 from 77) compiling 96 for the second wicket. Australia were 4/181 before Travis Head’s 71 not out from 64 balls piloted Australia to 9/277 from 50 overs.
A century to Ben Stokes (102 not out from 109 balls) and 87 (from 81) to captain Eoin Morgan helped England to 4/240 after 40.2 overs before rain abandoned play. Josh Hazlewood took 2/50 from 10 overs. Only needed 38 from 58 balls with six wickets left, England probably would have won comfortably, but Duckworth-Lewis confirmed it.
England topped the group while Bangladesh – playing their first Champions Trophy since 2006 – qualified for the semi-finals after beating New Zealand.
While rain denied Australia the chance to advance, they were outplayed by New Zealand and England while they would have beaten Bangladesh.
Australia now have a long break to prepare for the home Ashes series this summer.
