Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to Melbourne from July.
The Arts Centre Melbourne (State Theatre) will host Superstar from Saturday July 29 until Sunday August 13.
Presented by The Production Company, Rob “Millsy” Mills (Ghost, Wicked) plays Jesus, Alinta Chidzey (Curtains, Show Boat) plays Mary Magdalene and Zoy Frangos (Les Miserables, South Pacific) plays Judas.
Superstar – based around the Gospels’ account of the last week of Jesus’ life – started in the seventies and is still as popular and enduring as ever.
While everyone has their favourite version, Australian fans will remember the 1992 production with John Farnham (Jesus), Kate Cebrano (Mary Madelene), John Stevens (Judas), John Waters (Pontius Pilate) and Angry Anderson (King Herod). Everything’s Alright enjoyed mainstream success, peaking at number six in the 1992 ARIA Singles Chart. It was revived in 2012 as a live arena tour with Tim Minchin (Judas), former Spice Girl Melanie C (Mary Magdeline) and Ben Forster (Jesus).
Other popular song include “Heaven on Their Minds”, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”, “Damned For All Time” / “Blood Money”, “The Last Supper”, “Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say)”, “King Herod’s Song (Try it and See)” , “Judas’ Death”, “Trial Before Pilate” and “The Crucifixion” to name a few.
